I liked a full third of this sampler, which is impressive considering the genre.

    My favorites:

#3 (Hell) - hey, harmonic progressions, understandable lyrics and the singer totally makes me grin.
#7 (Graveyard) - Yeah, a bit like Janis Joplin (which is cool), good guitar licks, and an overall just awesome sounding song.
#11 (Sirenia) - female singer! Good harmonies, range and along the way, there's a strong rhythmic guitar going on underneath, reminding us where we are. It kind of reminds me of the end credits of a movie, almost.
#13 (Rhapsody of Fate) - Now, the intro to this one really reminds me of some of the songs by the Trans-Siberian Orchestra (which is awesome and incredible). I always enjoy a band that uses more than 3 chords. :)
#14 (Avantasia) - This one reminds me of Guns N Roses.

So this is simply proof that the non-metal listener can find enjoyable songs on this album too!

According to another free Amazon mp3 sampler I downloaded yesterday March is Metal Month 2011. This collection is Metal & Hard Rock and it rocks.

Meshuggah start us off with Bleed. Staccato drums battling metal vocals until 4 minutes when all is quiet for 40 seconds. Drums return then guitars and vocal. Nothing boring here.

Track 2 is by Dimmu Borgir. Symphonic opening & multiple vocalists as 'Gateway' makes it's way down the road of Metal and it's numerous Genres. This is a messy track with multiple inputs, choral voices grand music as with track 1 it is not boring.

Track 3 is Hell playing Save Us From Those Who Would Save Us(without intro). I like the song title and the song. Hard Rock through and through manic singer great song.

Next up Before The Dawn bring us Deathstar. Starts with metal vocal over busy band who I want to picture reading their sheet music as they keep up with this song's twists and turns. Great track... Read more

All right, another free Nuclear Blast sampler! Not only does this label have most of the big names in metal, they've also been really good about giving fans these free MP3 samplers to give fans a taste of what the label has to offer. This time around we get a whopping 15 tracks, from black metal (Dimmu Borgir) to folk metal (Korpiklaani) to power metal (Avantasia and Rhapsody of Fire) to gothic metal (Sirenia) to all variations of thrash (Forbidden, Destruction) to the hardcore-influenced metal (Agnostic Front, Sylosis) to death metal (Belphegor) and all points in between (however you'd classify a band like Meshuggah).

Most of these bands and songs are really good, though obviously individual tastes will vary. One thing that remains true though, is that free metal is always a good thing. Download this sampler and discover some new bands or get reacquainted with some old favorites.
