For most of my life I have primarily been immersed in music of the "Common Practice Period." Although I took History of Jazz during my undergraduate music degree studies, I have too long neglected this art form. This collection of CDs represents perhaps the best, solid compilation of the most famous, original jazz recordings ranging over a wide period of jazz history. As the other reviewer mentioned the sound quality of these discs is excellent. These discs are essentially miniaturized versions of the original LPs...with some additional bonus tracks. The front side of each disc sleeve contains the original cover art and the backside is a scaled version of the back of the LP sleeve. Unfortunately on the back, the text is almost too small to read due to the large scaling required to fit everything on the back of a CD sleeve. Each disc contains the full original... The jazz recordings in this collection are top rate - Miles Davis, Charles Mingus, Chet Baker etc. and the sound is excellent. For the present price it is under 2 dollars a CD which is such a bargain for such good music. The music dates from the 50's to the 80's and all are items in Sony/Columbia/RCA Victor's catalog along with some European issues. Very nice packaging with mini lp type jackets. The included booklet contains session and bonus track information. I purchased this along with vol 2 as well as the Perfect Blues Collection. 75 discs at less then $2 each. Any Jazz fan would love this collection. |
