It not only became a template for her in movies, but its soundtrack is to date the biggest-selling movie soundtrack of all time. No question about it, that it is all thanks to her cover of Dolly Parton's I Will Always Love You. The song has never been duplicated with that much feeling from the simplicity of Whitney's voice, driven to the highest notes and thedeepest soul. It still brings me to tears each time I hear it from start to finish. If there is one cover song that has been so dominant that withstands the testiments of time, this is that one. If you're a hard core Whitney Houston fan, I absolutely recommend you have this for your music library. It is a sad fact that many of the most talented, gifted spirits often struggle with pain and addiction. Lyrics like "So, goodbye. Please don't cry/ We both know I'm not what you need" take on a new significance now, at her passing. The same world that splashed her image all over the tabloids now mourns the loss of one of the world's greatest voices and, if I may say so, greatest hearts. "I hope life treats you kind/ And I hope you have all you've dreamed of/ And I wish to you joy and happiness/ But above all this, I wish you love." Doesn't this seem to sum up Whitney's legacy? She gave it raw, emotional power and her melismas make it otherworldly. She turned a song on a movie soundtrack into a perennial classic. It's a perfect Valentine's Day song, it's a wedding song. Whitney took Dolly's song and made it her own. With the news of her untimely passing, she will always be loved (1963-2012) |
